Day 1: Bologna to Badolo

Day 1. 29.5km.

Here I am looking pretty groggy and sheepish on the steps of San Pietro in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna, this morning.

The first part of the walk took me up to the church of Madonna di San Luca, under the porticoes (covered pavement framed by arches) which the city is famous for. Then I was through woods into the hills to the south.

Much climbing. Very hot. However, Day 1 of the Via Degli Dei is done and was very much enjoyed!

Also a lovely old Italian lady gave me coffee in her garden. I couldn’t understand a word she was saying but she smiled a lot, at least.

The place I’m staying appears not to have hot water, definitely no wifi, and no card payments...but there’s a pretty nice view to make up for it!

Bologna's famous porticos. They cover some 53km of the city, and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 on account of their cultural and artistic significance.

Looking back towards the church of Madonna di San Luca, above Bologna.

One happy hiker! Perhaps it has not quite sunk in that I am setting off to walk 1,600km over two months...

Out of the city and into the countryside, walking behind two other hikers on the Via Degli Dei
